Spelman College
Title:
Climate Modeling and Climate Change
Director(s):
Monica Stephens
Email:
mstephens@spelman.edu
Dates of Program: June 1 - July 12, 2006
Summary:
The focus of this research experience will be on climate modeling.
Climate models will be used as a vehicle to help students (1)
understand how a physical model is developed and the physical and
numerical limitations of these models, (2) learn scientific computing
through the use of appropriate numerical methods to implement their
models, (3) enhance their programming skills by implementing the models
in either MATLAB or C++ , and (4) develop their technical writing and
presentation skills. In this six-week experience, students will be
introduced to the basics of numerical climate modeling. They will learn
about the physical laws and how these laws are translated into a
mathematical formulation or parameterization and are subsequently
solved using numerical techniques.
