Historic Women of Mathematics, l9"x33"   ($12.50)   Carolina Biological Supply Company, 2700 York Road, Burlington NC 27215, (800) 334-5551, http://www.carolina.com/.

The poster, Historic Women of Mathematics, fills the need for a classroom resource picturing women and their accomplishments in mathematics. Pictured are Hypatia, Sophie Germain, Sonya Kovalevsky, Emmy Noether, and Grace Hopper. Next to each cameo picture on the poster is a brief history of each woman's accomplishments.  Of course, there is the caveat that we really don't have any contemporary pictures of Hypatia from which one can draw a picture.  At least, for someone raised in Alexandria, Egypt, her image on the Historic Women of Mathematics poster is more true to life and is not the classical Greek woman as Hypatia has often been pictured.  The poster is actually reminiscent of a poster printed in the l980s also portraying historic women.  Although Carolina's poster is most attractive and well done, I actually prefer my poster from the 80s because among the women pictured there is more ethnic diversity.  Such a poster is not available today.

I highly recommend the poster.   It is colorful, interesting, and draws student attention.
