MathFest Highlights: 2009 Meeting a Smashing Success

The record 1,517 attendees of this year's MathFest in Portland, Ore., were treated to one of the best programs in the history of the MAA's annual summer meeting—and enjoyed a beautiful city with much to offer.

From appealing talks and exhibits to poster sessions and the 5K Fun Run, MathFest featured something for every type of math enthusiast. Some of the highlights include:

MathFest 5K Fun Run/Walk Helps Portland's Homeless

This year's edition of the 5K Fun Run/Walk, at MathFest in Portland, Oregon, was a bigger and better version of the first race, held last August in Madison, Wisconsin.

First, the race grew by about 50 participants to around 175 runners and walkers. Second, the MAA was proud to donate $2,500 to JOIN, a Portland non-profit organization that supports the efforts of homeless individuals and families to transition out of homelessness into permanent housing.

China Girls Math Olympiad: U.S. High School Girls Bring Home Seven Medals

All seven girls on the U.S. team at the 2009 China Girls Mathematical Olympiad team will be coming home with medals.

U.S. IMO Team Brings Home Two Gold Medals

The 2009 International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) has announced the final results. The six member U.S. team was awarded two Gold medals and four Silver medals. The U.S. team finished sixth among the 104 participating countries in total points. Students tackled six difficult problems over two days of competition, each problem being worth seven points for a total of 42 points.

The U.S. International Mathematical Olympiad team has arrived in Bremen, Germany and is in the midst of the two IMO testing days. The team participated in the opening ceremony earlier this week, and will travel through Germany with the rest of the IMO participants after they have completed the rigorous test. While the students are on excursion, the tests will be scored and prizes will be determined. Winners will be announced before the closing ceremony early next week.
