75-Year MAA Member Frederick H. Steen Dies at 102

An MAA member since 1935, when D. R. Curtiss became president of the Association, Frederick H. Steen died in January 2010 at the age of 102.

Recognized as an outstanding educator, Steen wrote five books, including Analytic Geometry, Plane Trigonometry with Tables, and Plane and Spherical Trigonometry with Tables, which were coauthored by David H. Ballou.

Steen received a bachelor of arts degree (summa cum laude) from Colgate University and a Ph.D. from Harvard University. After serving on the faculty of Georgia Tech for eight years, he joined Allegheny College in 1942, where he was professor of mathematics for 33 years. He was chairman of the department, secretary of the faculty, and chair of the Allegheny Section of the MAA.

A memorial service was conducted at the Alumni Center at Allegheny College on February 6, 2010. In lieu of flowers, the family requested donations be made to the Frederick and Marion Steen Mathematics Scholarship at Allegheny College.
