High Fashion Meets Advanced Mathematics on Paris Runway

March 10, 2010

High-profile celebrities and fashion elites are the mainstays of the front row at fashion shows, especially during Fashion Week . Not so at the recent Issey Miyake fall-winter 2010/2011 display in Paris, where Fields Medalist William Thurston (Cornell University) had a seat front and center.

The collection, designed by Dai Fujiwara, was inspired by Thurston's Geometrization Conjecture. According to an article in The Associated Press, the collection was described as "a comprehensive vision of eight geometries that are sufficient to form an ideal shape for all possible three-dimensional topologies."

Thurston wore a Miyake blazer to the event and told an AP reporter that his discussion with Fujiwara uncovered real areas of overlap between their seemingly different professions.
