Tigers Pitcher Uses Math Background as Formula for Success

In an recent article for Michigan Local News, Detroit Tigers pitcher Max Scherzer talked about using advanced metrics to evaluate his results during the course of the season.

Statistical application comes naturally to Scherzer, who studied business finance at the University of Missouri and scored a 35 out of a possible 36 in math on the ACT.

He tracks his pitches using PITCHf/x, a system created by Sportvision, but says the greatest benefit is to the psychological aspect of the game.

"It shows me there is an inherent failure in pitching," he said. "You just have to let go of those and focus on the next batter, the next game. You can't do anything about bloop hits.

"And this game still comes down to pitch execution, scouting reports and mechanics. But advanced metrics helped me see things I had not seen before."
