MAA Prizes and Awards Announced at MathFest 2006

The awarding of prizes for expository writing has long been one of the high points of MathFest. Recently, two new prizes have been added: the Alder Award, a teaching award for new college professors, and the Selden Prize, for research on undergraduate mathematics education. The awards were announced on August 11, 2006. MAA president Carl Cowen presided over the ceremony. (Award recipients whose photos do not appear below were unable to be present.)

Association for Women in Mathematics Announces Michler Prize

The Association for Women in Mathematics (AWM) has announced that Gerhard and Waltraut Michler of Essen, Germany donated $1 million to Cornell University to establish a prize in the memory of their daughter, Ruth Michler, who was tragically killed in November, 2000 while riding her bicycle.
