Administrative Rulings and Procedures

The American Invitational Mathematics Examinations (AIME) are held towards the end of March, such that the two dates are two weeks apart. For the AIME I will be held , , and the AIME II will be held , , . These are the only days the exam may be taken officially. Schools may give the exam for practice on the Wednesday, Thursday, or Friday, immediately following each exam. We will grade it, but students will not be eligible to take the USAMO.

AIME rules for AMC 10 and AMC 12

AMC 12 All students with a score of 100 or above or placing in the top 5% on the AMC 12 will be invited to participate in the AIME.

AMC 10 All students with a score of 120 or above or placing in the top 1% of the AMC 10 will be invited to participate in the AIME.

Alternate testing sites:

If the school is closed for Spring break on the AIME date, there are several options if the students are in town. The teacher may give the exam:

  1. In the school if the building is open and there is someone who can witness the opening of the package.
  2. In the local public library if allowed. (A library official may sign the certification form.)
  3. In a church. (A church official may sign the certification form.)

You must give the AIME on one of the two official dates ( or in ) all eligible students participating at one time (if this is a problem, please call our office for instructions on how to proceed); invited students who cannot be there miss this opportunity. Students may only take one of the exams, ( or in ).

Be advised that if students miss the first exam (on , , ), they may take the alternate sitting of the exam ( , , ). If you need to have a student or students sit for the exam on , read below for the applicable details and then contact the AMC office for details. There is a minimal charge for the second exam, due to compressed shipping considerations. These two dates will be the only dates acceptable for qualifying for the USAMO.

There willl be a charge for up to 10 students or a charge for 11 or more students per school for taking the alternate version of the AIME. Payment must be included when the AIME answer forms are returned for grading. The Answer forms, Certification form and Check must be returned by express mail so they arrive in the AMC office by the following (, ). You may give the first exam for practice between the two exam periods (in between and ) and we will be pleased to grade it for you.
