Gauss wrote Farkas Bolyai that he was sorry they had not discussed the theory of parallels during their student days together at Gottingen (1796-1798). Farkas Bolyai may be most famous for discouraging his son Janos from studying Euclid's Parallel Postulate and Janos for ignoring his father's advice and inventing non-Euclidean geometry.
