    Edward Huntington born in Clinton, New York. This enthusiastic and innovative teacher was professor of mechanics at Harvard from 1919 to 1941. His book, The Continuum (1917), was the standard introduction to set theory for many years. In 1928 he recommended the "method of equal proportion" for the apportionment of representatives to Congress; in 1941 this method was adopted by Congress.

    Charles Richter born in Hamilton, Ohio. The seismologist developed the earthquake magnitude scale now known as the Richter Scale.

    Srinivasa Ramanujan died at the age of 32 in India. This self-educated mathematician, who traveled from India to Cambridge, England, to visit G. H. Hardy, filled notebooks with complicated identities involving elliptic functions, continued fractions, and infinite series.
