    Alcuin of York died at Tours, France. He played an important role in Charlemagne's attempt to reorganize the educational system by popularizing the study of the seven liberal arts and encouraging the study of mathematics as an aid in determining the date of Easter. He wrote the first book of mathematical recreations.
