Beginning Faculty Receive the Mathematical Association of America’s Alder Awards for Teaching

Undergraduates may struggle with math, but great math professors do more than drill content:  They spark interest in mathematics. Three associate professors who have shown leadership in improving the teaching and learning of mathematics will receive the Henry L. Alder Awards for Distinguished Teaching by a Beginning College or University Mathematics Faculty Member from the Mathematical Association of America (MAA) at the MAA MathFest conference next week in Washington, DC.

Mathematical Association of America Celebrates Centennial at MAA MathFest

This summer mathematicians from around the world will come to Washington, D.C., for a once-in-a-century event: the Mathematical Association of America’s (MAA) centennial celebration at MathFest.

"The Centennial MathFest will be an historic opportunity to reflect on where we have been as a mathematical community and where we are going--in the mathematics we research, as well as the ways we champion mathematics to educate and serve society,” says MAA President Francis Su.

James Gates Jr., a self-described "simple country theoretical physicist," former Congressman Rush Holt, a five-time Jeopardy! winner who now heads the world's largest general scientific society; and Ohio State University's David Manderscheid will share their thoughts on advancing math literacy during a special science policy panel at MAA MathFest.

U.S. Team Takes First Place at International Mathematical Olympiad

Chiang Mai, Thailand: The six-person team representing the United States took first place at the 56th International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO). The 2015 IMO was held in Chiang Mai, Thailand, from July 4 to 13.
