“Wanted: Brilliant Young Minds” Campaign Kicks Off

Many Americans first heard about the International Mathematical Olympiad last summer when the U.S. team made national headlines for winning first place in what is known as the world championship mathematics competition for high school students. Six months later, more than 250 math enthusiasts filled a movie theater in Seattle, Washington to watch math competitions come alive on the silver screen.

Washington, DC (January 4, 2016) —The Mathematical Association of America (MAA), with support from Sony Pictures Home Entertainment, presents an exclusive screening of A Brilliant Young Mind, to kick off the MAA’s campaign, “Wanted: Brilliant Young Minds,” to promote awareness of MAA-sponsored mathematical competitions for students nationwide. The screening event will take place at the AMC Pacific Place Cinema in Seattle, Washington on January 7, 2016.

MAA Presents Awards for Outstanding Mathematical Research, Writing, and Teaching

Each year the Mathematical Association of America (MAA) honors outstanding individuals for their contributions to the community in research, writing, and teaching. The MAA will present awards to the following mathematicians for their professional accomplishments next month at the Joint Mathematics Meetings (JMM):

For the first time since 1994, the United States won first place at this year’s 56th International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO). The team of six high school students and their coaches were featured in all major news outlets across the country, but U.S. congressmen are calling for one more form of recognition.
