D.C. Math Circle Holds Inaugural Meeting

The first gathering of the District of Columbia Math Circle took place on the afternoon of Sept. 24, 2007, at the MAA's Carriage House. This inaugural session brought together nine talented eighth-graders, drawn from Washington's public and charter schools.

2006 Annual Survey of the Mathematical Sciences—First and Second Reports

The First Report of the 2006 Annual Survey of the Mathematical Sciences, which presents salary data for faculty members in U.S. departments of mathematical sciences in four-year colleges and universities, has been published. It also gives a broad picture of 2005-06 new doctoral recipients from U.S. departments in the mathematical sciences, including their employment status in fall 2006.

Barry Spieler Is MAA's New Visiting Mathematician

Barry Spieler has been a member of the MAA since he was a sophomore at Tufts University. Now a professor of mathematics at Birmingham-Southern College, Spieler is getting the opportunity to work with the association to which he has belonged for so long—as this fall's visiting mathematician at MAA headquarters in Washington, D.C.

Math Competitions: Sherry Gong's Striking Success

Sherry Gong, 18, stands out in a number of ways. Of the six members of the U.S. International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) team, she was the only female. And, among the 536 participants in this year's IMO, held in July in Hanoi, Vietnam, she finished in a tie for seventh place, earning a gold medal and the distinction of being one of the best young mathematicians in the world.


 

CBMS Releases 2005 Survey of Undergraduate Mathematics

Every five years since 1965, the Conference Board of the Mathematical Sciences (CBMS) has compiled a report that examines the status of undergraduate mathematics and statistics in U.S. colleges and universities.  The report contains detailed data on timely topics such as enrollments, bachelors degrees granted, available academic resources, and faculty demographics.  Now available for download, the 2005 report is filled with valuable information:
